We are of course all feeling a little unsettled at the moment in the wake of the EU Referendum. During times like this when our circumstances are uncertain and unpredictable, we can experience internal conflicts both on an emotional and an intellectual level. A heightened sense of anxiety can result in an excess of mental energy; whereas fearful anticipation can bring about mental paralysis. This confused mix of restlessness and stasis can mean that everyday decisions become difficult to make; we start to question everything; and ultimately we can even start to doubt ourselves.
Hatha yoga is a fantastic way of bringing the mind and emotions back into balance, through its emphasis on acceptance in the here and now; through its grounding influence; and by keeping the body moving:
Practices which are slow and mindful will help soothe away any physical and mental tension.
When we feel more grounded physically and psychologically, we feel strong and confident, and in a better position to look to the future with positivity.
Creative vinyasa flow classes can help bring about a feeling of joy and inspiration, thus easing away any fear.
More "predictable" sequences such as Ashtanga can help us notice daily changes in our bodies and minds - in terms of strength, flexibility, tension and mental concentration. We can then more easily accept the fact that life is unpredictable and not easily controlled.
Times may be unstable, but we can find stability within ourselves!
